Having travelled north along the KZN coastline on many occasions, as far as Mozambique's Ponta Do Oura and closer to home, St Lucia; Kosi Bay had been a passing landmark on my trips and nothing more until June 2024 when a google search had led me to Isbinidi's Kosi Forest Lodge website. The prospect of a forest stay, snorkelling, exploration of a unique lake system and the chance to see some rare birding species was something that had engaged my excitement. Our 3 night stay did not disappoint but rather earmarked one of our favourite South African travel adventures.
The Stay - Kosi Bay Forest Lodge
Nestled within the coastal forest - this lodge is truly a gem. Rustic glamping aesthetic, fantastic view points, fantastic food coupled with a list of adventure activities make for the perfect blend of luxury and rugged exploration.
Wildlife, Nature and Exploration
Snorkelling at the Kosi River Mouth
On day one of our trip we set off on a trip to the Kosi River mouth, 2km from the Mozambique border post. A scenic off road drive culminating in magnificent view of the Kosi lake system, featuring the distinctive Thonga fish traps and panoramic ocean views.
We got straight into snorkelling at the river mouth and thoroughly enjoyed this unique experience amongst this unique biome. We were thrilled to see a plethora of fish, in particular a first glimpse of a pair of Marbled Leopard Eels in and amongst the rocky shelf. The experience was topped of by a dip in the surf and a picnic lunch provided by or guide.
Lake Expedition
Day 2 started of with the much anticipated boat adventure through the Kosi Lake System. The boat traversed through fresh water lakes, salt water lakes and channels in between. Providing us stunning visuals of this stunning landscape and flora and fauna including Lesser Flamingos, Hippos, Water Monitors and a plethora of water birds. The experience was topped off with the opportunity to snorkel in one of the salt lakes - a rare chance to see first hand the underwater activity of life amongst the mangroves.
Canoeing the Channels
The final day, and perhaps the cherry on top for a birder lover like myself, was the canoeing expedition through one of the lakes long winding channels. To reach our point of departure, we first had to traverse the beautiful Raphia Palm Forest, a highlight in its own right. Canoeing through the channels was a wonderous way to experience this wonderland, a feeling of being connected to nature in a primal way. The experience was only enhanced by sighting of hippo and crocodile and up close encounters with amazing and rare birdlife included the Palmnut Vuluture, Giant Kingfisher, Malachite Kingfisher, The African Fish Eagle and a number of the Heron family.
Final Notes
Simultaneously igniting a sense of adventure and a relaxation reset - Kosi Bay offered a magical, otherworldly getaway and I am already looking forward to the next visit. It reminded me that magic is often hidden in unlikely places and sometimes you don't have to look to far to find it - just adjust your eyes and expect to find it.
